Truck crashes around Tampa Bay

A crash with a tractor-trailer, box truck or other heavy commercial vehicle is rarely just a driver-versus-driver dispute. There may be a carrier, a cargo loader, a maintenance contractor and several insurance policies, and the records that explain what happened sit with companies that have their own lawyers.

Our Tampa office, at 1600 E 8th Ave, Suite A200, Tampa, FL 33605, meets people hurt in truck crashes by appointment, in English or Spanish. Consultations are free and confidential. Florida-wide rules are set out on the statewide truck accident page.

Short answer: after a truck crash, get care, avoid giving the carrier's insurer a recorded statement, and talk to a lawyer fast so that logs, inspection files and camera data can be preserved.

What federal records show here

The Fatality Analysis Reporting System lists 348 fatal crashes involving a medium or heavy truck (over 10,000 pounds gross weight) in the seven counties our Tampa office covers from 2019–2023, about 10% of all fatal crashes there. Those are crashes in which someone died; crashes with serious injuries but no death are not counted.

Crash counts come from NHTSA FARS and include only crashes in which someone died.

Hillsborough County leads with 117 such crashes, and Polk County follows with 101, a high number for its population of about 725,046. Polk's roads carry traffic between Tampa and Orlando and the rest of the state, and its most frequently named roads in FARS are US 27, US 98, SR 60 and US 17.

Roads where trucks and cars meet

Hillsborough County's frequently named roads include US 41, I-75, SR 60, US 301 and I-4. Pasco's include US 19, SR 54, SR 52 and US 301. Truck crashes often happen where fast through traffic meets entrances, exits and signalized intersections. Evidence from those locations includes signage, lane geometry, nearby cameras and, for the truck, onboard data.

The records we ask for

Commercial carriers must keep certain records under the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations, and some are kept for only a limited time. Depending on the crash, we may ask the carrier to preserve:

  • driver logs and electronic logging data;
  • the driver's qualification file;
  • inspection, repair and maintenance records;
  • dispatch and trip records and bills of lading;
  • event recorder and onboard camera data;
  • post-crash test records, where they exist.

A written preservation request does not guarantee that the records survive, but it makes it harder for anyone to say they did not know to keep them. Time matters.

Who may be responsible

Depending on the facts, the driver, the carrier, a company that loaded the cargo, a maintenance contractor or a manufacturer may share responsibility. Florida compares fault: in most negligence cases a person found more than 50% at fault for their own harm generally cannot recover, and smaller shares reduce an award (Fla. Stat. § 768.81). Our comparative fault guide explains how that works.

Hospitals

Serious truck-crash injuries are usually treated at designated trauma centers. Florida's list (updated July 23, 2026) includes these in the counties we cover:

  • Hillsborough County: St. Joseph's Hospital (Level II / Pediatric); Tampa General Hospital (Level I)
  • Pinellas County: Johns Hopkins All Children's Hospital (Pediatric); Orlando Health Bayfront Hospital (Level II)
  • Pasco County: HCA Florida Bayonet Point Hospital (Level II)
  • Manatee County: HCA Florida Blake Hospital (Level II)
  • Sarasota County: Sarasota Memorial Hospital (Level II)
  • Polk County: Lakeland Regional Health Medical Center (Level I)

Keep every record, and tell every provider how the injury happened.

Where a lawsuit would be filed

Venue follows the county: the Thirteenth Judicial Circuit for Hillsborough, the Sixth Judicial Circuit for Pinellas and Pasco, and the Tenth Judicial Circuit for Polk. Because truck crash injuries are often serious, many claims exceed the $50,000 limit of Florida's county courts and are filed in circuit court. A negligence suit over an incident after March 24, 2023 is generally barred after two years (Fla. Stat. § 95.11). Our deadline guide covers the earlier deadlines.

What to do in the first days

  1. Call 911 and get medical care.
  2. Photograph the truck, DOT number, company name and plates, and the scene.
  3. Collect witness names; truck drivers nearby often saw what happened.
  4. Do not discuss fault with the carrier's insurer, and do not give a recorded statement.
  5. Keep a folder of bills, letters and notes on how you feel each day.
  6. Call a lawyer quickly so preservation requests can go out.

Why truck cases take longer to evaluate

Truck claims rarely settle quickly, and for good reasons. The injuries tend to be serious and slow to stabilize, so the full cost of care is unclear for months. The carrier's insurer often has adjusters and lawyers on the scene or the phone within hours. And the defendant list can be longer than one name. In the seven counties around our Tampa office, a crash on a busy corridor in Hillsborough or Polk may involve a carrier based in another state, which affects where records are kept and how quickly they can be requested.

A careful evaluation therefore waits for two things: medical clarity about what the injury will mean over time, and the carrier's records. Settling before either is available usually means settling for less than the claim is worth.

If you are not sure whether the truck that hit you was operating for a company, note any logo, phone number, USDOT number or trailer number you saw, and tell your lawyer even if the details seem incomplete.
