Eligibility

Eligibility requirements

Applicants must meet all four requirements below to be considered.

  1. 01

    Collegiate student athlete

Currently enrolled at an accredited college or university in the United States and a member of a school-sponsored athletic team. Athletes in any sport are eligible.

  2. 02

    Legal field of study

Currently majoring in, or intending to major in, criminal justice, pre-law, or another legal discipline (for example, paralegal studies, legal studies, or political science on a pre-law track).

  3. 03

    Academic standing

A minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.

  4. 04

    Demonstrated leadership

Shows leadership both on and off the field: in athletics, in the classroom, and in the community.

Leadership

What leadership looks like

Applicants should show leadership in all three settings. A title such as captain helps but is not required; leading by example counts.

On the field

Team captain or co-captain; mentoring younger teammates; sportsmanship and accountability; setting the standard in practice and competition

In the classroom

Strong academic effort while balancing athletics; tutoring or study-group leadership; officer roles in pre-law, criminal justice, or student-government organizations

In the community

Volunteer and service work; youth sports coaching or mentoring; involvement in legal aid, advocacy, or justice-related programs

Evaluation

How applicants are evaluated

Eligible applications are reviewed by a selection committee from Rodriguez & Williamson, PLLC and R2 Cares. Meeting the minimum requirements makes a student eligible; the committee then chooses the recipient using these criteria:

Leadership
The depth and consistency of leadership on the field, in the classroom, and in the community.
Commitment to the law
A clear interest in criminal justice or a legal career and how the student plans to use it.
Academic effort
Academic performance in light of the demands of competing as a collegiate athlete.
Character
Integrity, sportsmanship, and service to others.

The committee's decision is final.
